Maintenance Commands joindomain(1m)
NAME
joindomain - add a PC NetLink server to a domain
SYNOPSIS
joindomain [ -I instance ]
DESCRIPTION
The joindomain command is used to configure a PC NetLink
server's domain and its role within that domain. It is an
interactive command and takes no arguments.
Do not use this command to change the role of the server if
you are not changing domains. Instead, use Server Manager
or the PC NetLink promote command to promote or demote a
server.
If there is an error during processing or if you interrupt
the command, joindomain restores the server to the state it
was in before you issued the command.
If you are configuring a server as a backup domain con-
troller or member server, you need to supply the name of the
primary domain controller, which must be running and con-
nected to the network.
If a computer account for the desired server name already
exists on the PDC, and it matches the desired role of the
server, the existing account will be used as-is. Otherwise,
you will be asked if you wish to create a computer account
on the PDC. If you choose to do so, you will be prompted
for an administrative account and password on the PDC. If
you decide not to create a computer account, or do not have
an administrative account and password on the PDC, you must
either quit or choose a different server name and try again.
OPTIONS
-I instance
Specifies the PCNL instance name or number. In a multi-
instance environment instance may be specified either on the
command line or by the environment variable PCNL_INSTANCE.
If there is only one instance configured, it is not neces-
sary to specify this argument.
EXAMPLE
If a server is a backup domain controller in the domain
sales and you want to move it to be a backup domain con-
troller in the domain finance, you can use the joindomain
command.
WARNING
Using the joindomain command re-initializes the accounts
database. Using it on a primary domain controller will
destroy all of your account information, except for SID-to-
UNIX account mappings. SID-to-UNIX mappings are preserved
to allow the users to keep their mappings if a server moves
to a domain which trusts the server's original domain. If
these mappings are not needed, the administrator can remove
them by issuing the command "mapuname -p".
NOTE
If this server runs the Directory Replicator service, use
Server Manager to verify that the service is properly con-
figured after running joindomain.
